How to Spot a Phone Scam in NZ (2025 Edition)

Published Nov 12, 2025 • 5 min read

1) Hang up and call back on a known number

If someone says they are from your bank, internet provider, or the police, end the call and ring back using the number on your card or the official website. Scammers can spoof caller ID.

2) Never share verification codes

Banks, IRD and real companies never ask for your one‑time codes or full passwords. Treat codes like a physical key.

3) Watch for pressure and threats

“Act now or your account will be closed” is a scam tell. Real support will give you time to think and verify.

4) Check the payment method

Gift cards, crypto, and wire transfers are red flags. If asked to move money “for safety”, don’t.

5) Links & attachments

Don’t tap links in texts or emails. Type the website yourself or use bookmarked links. On a phone, long‑press to preview the address.
